A Look at HD Barcode Technology

For decades people have been using barcode technology to store information that can identify a product and its price. But with new technology comes new uses for existing systems like barcode labeling, and a new proprietary label called an HD barcode may see widespread use in the future. If you’ve never heard of HD barcodes, it’s okay. They aren’t something you’ll currently find on products in your local supermarket. But we’re here to tell you what they can do and why they may become more important in the future.

A standard barcode can relay some essential information about a product, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of security. HD barcodes aim to fix that. In fact, an HD barcode can store more than 58,000 times the amount of data found on standard UPC codes, which means much more can be done with it. For example, an HD barcode could contain information that indicates where a certain product should be sold, who it should be distributed by, and other useful details.

But that’s not all. An HD barcode can even store digital audio, and provide voice output if scanned by a certain smartphone application. In the future, we may be able to scan barcodes with our phones and have someone talk to us about the product. HD barcodes even offer an authentication feature that can limit who has access to the item it’s placed on. While this would obviously not be used for a retail product, it could be useful for a shipment to a distributor.

What do you think about HD barcodes and can you see them being widely used in the future? Let us know!
