In our blog, we have discussed the many benefits of barcodes and what industries they are playing a major role in and, in some instances, completely revolutionizing. A few such sectors are the healthcare industry and the food & beverage industries where barcodes are making it easier to keep track and transport goods, services, and more. More specifically, barcodes are making an impact when it comes to goods affected by the elements, such as oxygen. Barcodes are essential in preserving the potency of healthcare packaging.
The website Healthcare Packaging helps shed some light on why barcode technology is so essential. They write, “Many goods are sensitive to oxygen and have to be protected by the appropriate packaging. Optical oxygen sensors offer fast and easy analysis, even measuring oxygen traces, when checking materials, the tightness of closures, and the oxygen content in the headspace of packages.”
Depending on the contents of the packages, there must be something monitoring the amount of oxygen in ppm (parts per million) to ppb (parts per billion) ranges. If the oxygen is low, for example, it can lead to oxidative deterioration and shorten the shelf life of products. This of course wastes money and dilutes products in the food and beverage industry, but when it comes to medical devices and healthcare packaging, the results can be disastrous, such as a loss of human life.
While you may not think of it, but drought conditions in California and other weather calamities have disastrous effects on food, beverages, and healthcare products. Such barcodes that are able to peel back the onion of oxygen and gauge any items affected by oxygen are a crucial part of making the flow of goods and services continue unheeded; without barcodes, in other words, the purity of products is at risk, which puts us at risk.
